No visit to Odense is complete without discovering the story of Hans Christian Andersen.
Born in Odense in 1805, Andersen grew up in modest circumstances before becoming one of the world’s most famous writers. Stories including The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Snow Queen have been translated into languages around the world.
The modern H.C. Andersen House is the centrepiece of the city’s celebration of its most famous resident. Rather than functioning simply as a traditional museum filled with objects behind glass, it uses architecture, sound, art and interactive storytelling to explore Andersen’s life and imaginative world.
The museum complex is integrated into the historic neighbourhood where Andersen grew up, making the surrounding streets part of the experience.
Visitors can also see Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home, a small house that provides a striking contrast to the international fame he later achieved.
Even if you are not particularly interested in literary history, Andersen’s story provides a useful way of understanding Odense in the early 19th century.
