Discover one of Denmark’s most beautiful castles, surrounded by magnificent gardens, historic cars, fascinating exhibitions and family-friendly attractions. Egeskov Castle is a wonderful day trip from Odense, offering something for visitors of all ages.
If you are staying in Odense and looking for a memorable day trip, Egeskov Castle should definitely be on your list. Located on the island of Funen, approximately 30 kilometres south of Odense, this remarkable Renaissance castle is one of Denmark’s most popular historic attractions.
With its beautiful gardens, impressive architecture and wide range of activities, Egeskov offers much more than a traditional castle visit.
Explore a Castle Surrounded by Water
Built in 1554, Egeskov Castle is famous for its picturesque location in the middle of a lake. Its red-brick towers, elegant windows and reflections in the water make it look like something straight out of a fairytale.
Inside, you can explore historic rooms filled with antique furniture, paintings and fascinating objects that tell the story of the families who have lived here.
The castle is still privately owned, making it a particularly interesting example of Denmark’s historic aristocratic estates.
Discover the Beautiful Gardens
The gardens are one of my favourite reasons to visit Egeskov.
Wander through beautifully maintained flower gardens, discover impressive hedges and explore the famous maze.
During spring and summer, colourful flowers create a wonderful atmosphere, while autumn brings beautiful seasonal colours.
There are plenty of peaceful corners where you can simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Classic Cars, Museums and Family Adventures
Egeskov is also home to several fascinating exhibitions, including collections of vintage cars, motorcycles and historic vehicles.
Families will appreciate the playgrounds, outdoor activities and opportunities for children to explore the grounds.
You can easily spend an entire day here without running out of things to see.
Getting to Egeskov from Odense
The castle is approximately 30–40 minutes from Odense by car. Public transport is also possible, although you should check connections and walking distances before travelling.
My tip: Arrive early and allow at least four to five hours for your visit. Combine the castle interiors, gardens and exhibitions, and take a relaxing lunch break before returning to Odense.
